Growing up I had a variety of artistic and cultural influences. My older brothers studied creative writing and poetry, sculpture, and architecture. My own interests were in computers and mathematics. But even then computer arts were growing in the popular consciousness. Conway published his Game of Life, a program that generates endless complex patterns of swarming pixels following very simple rules of pixel “birth” and “death”. Mandelbrot’s famous fractal art also showed the limitless complexity and beauty of a simple recursive expression, and bridged these artificially produced patterns to very similar ones found in nature. … More
Ulrich Ellison grew up in a world filled with music. His Austrian home was enveloped in the sounds of his mother’s violin upstairs while his aunt played piano on the first floor. So it was no surprise when 4-year-old Ellison began playing Austrian folk songs, which he had been serenaded with since he was a baby, on the piano from memory.
Winner of three Downbeat Awards, Ulrich Ellison is gaining international recognition as an electric guitar player whose sounds and tones are starting to attract an ever growing fan base. Critics have compared his playing with artists as diverse as Jeff Beck, Joe Satriani, John McLaughlin and Mike Oldfield. Ellison´s style is fluid, melodic, and multidimensional.

Debbie and Bill produce art using different mediums and methods, with results that complement one another. Debbie paints and Bill does photography, and after meeting at an art show, the decided to collaborate. The result is “Side By Side”, their book that showcases their painting and photography.
We recently met with Austin Art Space resident artist, Marilyn Rea Nasky, for a private viewing of “For the Love of Art”, a national juried show featuring 52 original works from 38 artists. The show was juried by Dr. Christopher Adejumo, Associate Professor of Visual Art Studies, UT Austin, and is up through March 5, 2011.
The first “For the Love of Art” (6 years ago) received only 6 entries, and has now expanded to include area and national artists. The show is a wonderfully eclectic body of work that represents the love of art across a wide range of mediums and styles.
Austin Art Space and Studios has 9 resident artists and is now under the management of AVAA.

Cheryl Chaddick made it back to Texas after spending several years in San Francisco, and we’re glad she’s here. Cheryl is the artistic director and choreographer for her dance company and brings contemporary dance to patrons at the Austin Ventures Studio Theater at Ballet Austin.
